This morning, as I was chasing the dude around the house after an impromptu tubby, trying to catch up with him to put on his diaper before he peed on a bed or couch, he says to me, out of the blue, “pee on potty, no moere diapy.”
I asked him if he wanted to go pee on the potty now, and he did it (after a bit of sitting down and looking around)! High fives all around with mama and daddy! Clapping! Yeah!! He is 29 months old.
We’ve had that potty for at least 6 months and it’s never seen much action – when we first got it he liked to go in there and sit on it for a few seconds at a time, but that was months ago.
Lately, I’ve been telling the dude that one day he’ll learn how to pee on the potty like mama and daddy and then he’ll wear underwear instead of diapers. Then I would ask him if he wanted to go on the potty and he would say no. I just accepted that, thinking that sometime later this year we would give it a try. Last night I was reading that with boys it’s best to wait until they are 2.5 or 3 and that sounded fine to me.
But then this morning, the dude decides he wants to pee on the potty and there’s more. Then he says to me, “no moere diapy. wear underwear. mama, daddy underwear, me underwear.”
So I say, okay we’ll have to go to the store. Big conversation about all this with mama, daddy and the dude. Special trip planned to go to the mall with ice cream on the agenda too! We bought some pullups with Diego pictures (big score, Dora and Diego are favs of his).
And don’t you know, he peed two more times on the potty today. (High fives! Clapping! Yeah!!) I don’t know what to do about number two. That didn’t go so well. I saw him squat in the poo position and ran with him into the bathroom thinking that he could continue on the potty but that just made a mess since he’d already gone…yuck, I did not enjoy that at all. Plus I found out that cleaning up after a poop in a pullup is a pain.
Like it or not, we’ve entered potty training territory. I have no idea what I’m doing, but I do know that I am going to encourage potty time all the way.
My dream of being diaper free is just a little bit closer to reality than it was yesterday. It may take a long time to get there, but we’re on the right path. It’s potty time!
If you have any advice on what the heck is going to happen next, and how to do potty training, let me know. I’m all ears!
