In Honour of Canadian Infertility Awareness Week

Infertility is something that happens to ordinary people from all walks of life. There is no greater pain, no greater fear than the thought that you may not be able to have the family you dreamed of.

I know. I lived it.

IMG_1403Today I have a 3 year old son thanks to in vitro fertilization.

It took two years and thirty thousand dollars to realize this dream and while it was worth every penny, I find it hard to understand why treatment for infertility is any different than any other medical condition that is covered.

It is also sad to think that we might not have been able to conceive if we didn’t have the money for this. Or that we would have had to go into significant debt just to start a family.

I’m not certain what is needed to motivate change in Canada and the United States.

But I am speaking up in honour of Canadian Infertility Awareness Week. And I will speak up every chance I get.

  1. It is so hard going through infertility but definitely worth all the pain and grief … when you have that screaming baby in your arms 🙂
