Are you ready for some big fun families, because Friday, June 21 is the longest day of play. I don’t know about you, but I find it easy to get sucked into spending too much time watching TV or playing on my iPhone instead of heading over to the park with my kid or going outside to play with him.
On June 21, the longest day of the year, all Canadians are being encouraged to take advantage of the extra daylight hours, turn off the TV, and get out and play in the park , schoolyard, or at your local recreation centre.
ParticipACTION has developed some cool tools and a contest to inspire everyone:
- Download the Bring Back Play mobile app with tons of the classic games that kids have played for generations.
- Check out the tip sheet 100 Ways to Play for ideas
- Enter the Longest Day of Play Facebook Contest. Share your favourite way to play until June 20 and you could win a $50 Winners gift card. On June 21st, a gift card will be given away every hour from 8 am to 8 pm.
I hope that you and your family will go out and play on June 21 and everyday. And here’s a bonus tip from moi – leave your iPhone at home when you go.

Isn’t it interesting that these days we need an app or books etc to tell people how to play….people no longer just do it, they need someone to show them how
I thought of that when I was checking out the program!
I remember summers growing up and ALL the days seemed to last forever! Which was a good thing. We played cowboys and indians, we played settlers crossing the Oregan trail (the cows were not happy about being herded) and we chased butterflies all over.
When it got dark, we still did not want to go inside! But, alas, we finally did, slept like logs and then got up the next day to do it again!
Sounds wonderful!
I will be checking out this app.
