With my new focus on self love and making time for myself, I decided to step outside my comfort zone and sign up for some art classes this fall. An invitation to attend a felting workshop at Place des Arts in Coquitlam was just what I needed and I jumped at the chance to explore my creativity in a unique way though Fibre Arts.
I didn’t know what to expect when I arrived, but just looking at the beautiful colours in the wool we would be using was inspiring. The basics of learning “wet” felting turned out to be quite easy. The technique of rolling a piece of wool in your hands after soaking it in hot soapy water was both relaxing and a good workout for your hands and arms. The result was these beautifully coloured wool beads that we glued into little acorn hats. The other option was to string the beads into a necklace or bracelet.
With no babysitting to be found for my night out, I brought my 8 year old helper along. Both of us enjoyed our first Fibre Arts class which was actually very kid friendly. Therefore I am able to recommend Fibre Arts classes – which also includes knitting, weaving, spinning and dyeing – for adults and children.
If you are looking to explore your creativity in a fun and relaxed setting, I would definitely recommend checking out the classes at Place des Arts in Coquitlam.
If you are intrigued by the class I went to, I noticed there is a one day Festive Felting Class for adults coming up in December that would be a great way to try out Fibre Arts in a fun environment (with wine and treats). There is also Felted Christmas Ornaments for children aged 8 -12 on Dec 1 which looks really neat!
The Place des Arts Art Centre and Music school offers ongoing classes for all ages in Music, Visual Arts, Dance & Movement, and Theatre & Literary Arts as well as Camps & Field Trips. For more information visit www.placedesarts.ca.
Disclosure: I was invited to attend a complimentary Fibre Arts class for bloggers at Place des Arts. This was something I had never thought of doing before and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would recommend it to others based on the quality of the instruction and facility. All opinions are my own.

Hi, Lori! Kate here from Place des Arts. Thanks so much for your post about the felting evening at Place des Arts! We really enjoyed hosting you and your son and are thrilled you both enjoyed it so much.
Just a little correction, the adult felting event is the one called “Festive Felting” and it’s on Friday, December 16 from 6-8pm. It includes savory tidbits and a cash wine bar. For kids ages 8-12 we have a class called “Felted Christmas Ornaments” on Dec. 1 from 6-9pm.
Thanks again for blogging about us!
Thank you Kate! The class was really fun! I’ve made that little change to the class description in the post…
Thanks, Lori! Be sure to say hi if you come in to PdA!
