SmartKlean Laundry Ball Review

I recently had the opportunity to test out the SmartKlean Laundry Ball – a neat little gadget for those who are looking for alternative laundry cleaners. I was particularly interested in trying out this laundry ball as I have sensitive skin and am allergic to some laundry detergents.

vancouver mom bloggerWhat is the SmartKlean Laundry Ball?
According to SmartKlean, their laundry ball’s natural cleaning power lies within its contents: four types of ceramic beads and a magnetic center, each playing a role on the molecular level. The outer shell also physically agitates and cleans clothing. The combination of all these elements and their functions ensure a powerful wash by lifting away dirt, odors and germs.

Simply place the load together with the laundry ball in the washing machine and start wash. Reusable for 365 loads. For more information, visit the SmartKlean Canada website.

Test results
I tested the laundry ball out on my clothes and on my son’s clothes in two separate loads. I also did a load of towels and bathing suits after we came home from a visit to the pool.

1. I thought the laundry ball worked well for my clothes which were lightly worn and didn’t have any stains on them.

2. My son’s clothes which were dirty and stained did not fare as well. My contact at SmartKlean recommended using a good stain remover with the laundry ball for these kind of problems but I found that regular detergent (perfume and dye free) and some stain remover worked better for his clothes.

3. Finally, I washed the towels and bathing suits which smelled strongly of chlorine after a visit to the pool. The towels came out fresh and clean with no chlorine smell after using the SmartKlean laundry ball. However, I was disappointed that the bathing suits still smelled of chlorine so I rewashed them with regular detergent thinking that would get rid of the chlorine smell –  but it didn’t. Those bathing suits weren’t gonna smell any better no matter what you washed them with!

Overall, I was pretty happy with the SmartKlean ball and will use it to do some of our laundry loads in the future.

  1. I bought the smart clean ball two summers ago @ PNE. You are supposed to recharge it once a month in the sun. It was developed in sunny Florida, where there is always days to recharge!

I found the ball great for everyday stuff like you, but I can’t use it in winter.

They also sold the farmers’ stain stick which is amazing. Works well, lasts a long time and no itchy perfumes.

I’m extra sensitive to laundry addditives too.

    Thanks for your review!

I’d love an extea ball to charge while I wash. I have an athletic husband, dirt magnet 4 year old son, and am a messy Mommy.

  2. I had never heard of the SmartKlean Laundry Ball before. It sounds great and I would love to try one, especially for towels and sheets since it sounds like that’s where the ball excels.

  3. I think this concept of the smart klean laundry ball is really neat and would love to give it a try to see how it compares to the liquid detergent we use now.

  4. I am always looking for environmentally friendly, energy efficient solutions. I would love to try this in my home as my mother and child are both sensitive to detergents and soaps.

  5. Oh my goodness! I have been wanting to try one of these FOREVER, but they are so expensive that I’ve been putting it off. I would LOVE the chance to win one! Thank you so much for offering this draw, and for the thoughtful review 🙂

    1. There is a company selling this laundry ball on Amazon.com for $19 + $4.99 shipping. I’ve used this ball for more than 2 years (1 ball purchased for about $39 and 1 ball purchased for $45) and I was skeptical that this was the same ball, but the description said that it was “Original + Authentic” so I took a chance – and it IS the same ball – so I bought 2 more! If you want to try it for less money, just do a search on Amazon for “SmartKlean Laundry Ball”

  6. This sounds like a really interesting idea for laundry. I would love to try it for my multiple loads of baby stuff I seem to be doing of late.
